THINKING OF BUYING WATERFRONT? BY CHRISSY RACHO

Connecticut offers up a wide variety of waterfront living; from a vast selection of lakes to the Connecticut River banks to the entire coast on Long Island Sound. A portion of the coast is even considered a part of “The Gold Coast” in Lower Fairfield County towns such as Greenwich, Darien and Westport.
If snagging a beach home on the “Gold Coast” isn’t exactly in your budget, you can still enjoy the benefits of waterfront living by a lake or scenic river such as the Connecticut River or Farmington River.  Connecticut has a wide variety of lakes and lake communities in which you can enjoy.  Some notable lake communities include Bantam Lake, Lake Waramaug and Candlewood Lake. Bantam Lake is the states largest natural lake covering 930 acres and has a very active group of residents such as swimmers and boaters, even including ice sailing in the winter!
But if you do, in fact, crave the sound of seagulls and sailboats in your scenery, there are many beach towns that offer quaint, desirable communities with reasonable price tags.  For   example, Old Saybrook, former home of Katharine Hepburn, is a bustling coastal town with a lot to offer its residents. The average list price is $685,362 and the median sales price is $352,000. It sits at the mouth of the Connecticut River which also houses very charming towns. Moving further north up the CT River, you find towns such as Essex, Haddam and Lyme.

LETS GET RUNNING! BY CHRISSY RACHO

Who hasn’t used one of these excuses….”my knees cannot handle it,” “I have no time,” “I have no endurance”? Running is one of the greatest forms of exercise. Aside from being a fantastic excuse to get outside and listen to your favorite tunes or listen to nature, there are some big reasons to try it out!
Running really gets your heart pumping, which leads to a variety of fantastic side effects. The one people enjoy most is fat burning! Aside from cross country skiing, running burns the most number of calories per hour. Along with weight loss, benefits such as lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure are usually fast to follow.
All cardiovascular exercise is a great stress release. Stress is proven to have negative effects on your body and running will surely help you lower your stress levels.  What makes running different from many exercises is that you can do it alone or with friends; on the road, in a gym or in the woods; go at your own pace; compete; and many others! It is a very versatile sport that requires as little as a good pair of sneakers.
A great way to get motivated and increase your endurance is to set a goal to run a road race. Races are a fantastic way to get involved, have motivators and help you reach a goal. With any goal you set, there must be a plan! A 5K race is a great goal to set as a beginner runner.  The Mayo Clinic website has a great seven week training schedule for beginner runners. You can visit this link to see it (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/5k-run/SM00061).
Let us know what road races you plan to run this year, as we just may be there too!
As always, please consult your doctor before you try any new exercise plans to be sure it is ok for you.

Congratulations to Adam & Kristine on the arrival of Boden Ramon Pavelchak!
